Advanced Illness Care
Project Overview:
I spearheaded the development of a comprehensive curriculum for nurse care advisors, focusing on providing exceptional care during end-of-life situations. The goal of this training initiative was to equip nurses with the essential skills to effectively manage chronic conditions, navigate complex family dynamics, and accurately document telephonic interactions, ultimately enhancing patient care outcomes.
To create a high-impact learning experience, we implemented a robust curriculum design centered around a flipped-classroom approach. Preparatory activities, including assigned readings from authoritative texts and completion of web-based modules, laid a solid foundation for engaging classroom discussions and immersive role-based scenarios.
To cultivate an optimal learning environment, we devised a custom-designed board game to kickstart the workshop. This interactive icebreaker activity not only fostered engagement but also served as a comprehensive recap of the course content. Throughout the workshop, we introduced captivating role-based scenarios, skillfully employing the story sync technique to immerse participants in realistic patient care situations.
As the course progressed, participants were presented with challenging capstone activities that demanded the application of acquired knowledge and skills. A memorable culmination of the training involved an innovative activity that infused a touch of levity into the subject matter. Participants were tasked with caring for an egg for 24 hours, personalizing it with a name and decorations. This engaging exercise served as a powerful metaphor, reinforcing key course themes, including the intricacies of caring for vulnerable patients, the importance of navigating family dynamics with delicacy, and the preciousness and fragility of life.
By strategically designing a robust curriculum, incorporating immersive activities, and employing thought-provoking metaphors, we delivered a comprehensive and impactful learning experience. The training equipped nurse care advisors with the necessary tools, perspectives, and competencies to navigate end-of-life care scenarios with empathy, sensitivity, and utmost professionalism. The anticipated return on investment (ROI) of this training includes reduced costs, improved patient care outcomes, and enhanced operational efficiency within healthcare settings.
